Jul. 10th, 2011 02:05 pmFree stuff at Chez Hyphen:
Beer, mostly Summer beer, by the 6 pack or case.
Empty beer bottles, by the case. (At least 5 available).
"Portable" dishwasher, needs love. It's full size on wheels, attaches to sink. I have adapters.
- Probably just needs a line unblocked.
I'll add more as I find it.
Ping if you need my address!

Jun. 21st, 2011 10:36 am"Most memorable piece of advice your father ever gave?"
My father. I love him dearly, but he's not a man of words for the most part, and certainly not one for overarching commentary/advice.
He's a very smart man, but lives his life very much in the moment on very practical terms. The majority of his advice is along the lines of "it hurts when I do this..." "Well don't do that!"
It sounds glib, but it informed a lot of the way that I choose to go through life. The simplest answer is usually the best, and you shouldn't get bent out of shape about things you can't change.
This is in direct contrast to my mother, the queen of worrying and angst. The stark contrast between my parents is often amplified by the quiet Mona Lisa-like smile on my father's face in the moments when they're disagreeing. More often than not, such moments will end with my mom laughing at herself, or accusing him of being aloof. I can never tell which it'll be. I don't think he can either despite 38 years of marriage.
I absorbed a lot of my father in the 18 years we lived together, but I can't seem to pull out a single piece of memorable advice.
Just a lot of very practical life lessons, and a calm, strong presence.

Jun. 10th, 2011 12:27 amHad a great couple evenings with my wife recently.
We had conversations, and did things around the house, and even ran errands. We've both been so busy for the last few months that we hadn't done such simple things together in quite awhile.
On my own again for an evening, I got some good stuff done tonight.
I fixed a friend's spinning wheel (a little late though apparently, oops. Sorry m'lady), cleaned up a 2 hand planes that were my great-grandfathers's (one from each side of the family!), and folded a fuckton of laundry.
And even remembered to eat dinner!
Doesn't seem like much when I write it out, but it's a lot more than I feel like I've accomplished in one week-night in quite awhile.
Basement time! With gouges and wood glue! And old tools with history!
In closing, life is too short to not wear fun clothes.
Tomorrow I'm wearing yellow paisley underpants and my space invader socks.
Damn the torpedoes.

May. 30th, 2011 03:44 pmMany of you have heard the horn on my car.
Most of those people have mocked it for sounding something like a dying duck.
A weak dying duck.
Today I finally tore apart the front of the car to get at it and put in a replacement horn I'd purchased about a year ago! Maybe longer.
Well, I'm glad I tested it before reassembling. The replacement horn was even weaker.
*sigh*
Back to the drawing board.
